Wednesday the 7th of November, a gunman killed a dozen people in a music bar packed with college students in Thousand Oaks, near Los Angeles, California, said local authorities.

"The man barged in the Borderline Bar and Grill which was hosting an event for college students, with possibly several hundred young people in attendance", Captain Garo Kuredjian of the Ventura County Sheriff's office said earlier.

Captain Geoff Dean indicated during a press conference that 12 people have been killed during the shooting, including a policeman sent on the scene. "The shooter is also dead" he added, specifying that he wasn’t including him as one of the victims.

At 3 am local time, the number of injured was still to be determined as they were taken to several hospitals of the area Geoff Dean said, without being able to confirm if the gunman was killed by officers or shot himself.

The identity of the shooter remains to be determined but several witnesses mentioned a bearded man in a black trench coat holding a large calibre.

Around thirty gunshots

An unidentified witness cited by the Los Angeles Times indicated that a man entered the bar around 11:30 pm and started to shoot with a black gun. "He shot a lot, at least 30 times. I could still hear gunshots after everyone left," the Times quoted the man as saying.

Other witnesses said the shooter threw a smoke grenade. According to one of them who was interviewed by CNN while he was still in shock, the gunman came in through the main door, shot the guard at the door and the woman standing behind the counter.

Most of the witnesses mentioned by the media, a majority of them students from the many universities around Los Angeles, described the panic and chaos that took place after the first gunshots.

"Everyone quickly threw themselves on the ground. Everybody wanted to get out as fast as possible" said a young woman who escaped with a friend through the kitchen window to the AFP.

This mass shooting is the latest chapter in America's epidemic of gun violence.

Only 10 days ago a gunman killed 11 worshipers at a synagogue in Pittsburgh.
